4D Architects turns 30
Thirty years ago, 4D Architects co-founders Barbara Pickens, AIA and Ben Mulder set up a design studio in an old house in old Bellevue with just their pencils and drafting boards made from salvaged doors. Today, 4D Architects works from their self-designed sustainable office building in Kirkland. Their staff utilizes the latest CAD technology to produce 3D interactive models through to the final construction drawings. Ben and Barbara have remained true to the art of architectural design by hand drawing the initial designs.
Other things have remained consistent over the years; a commitment to quality and an innate understanding of how a well-designed home can enable a family to transition through the ever-changing stages of life. Ben and Barbara have chosen to stay personally involved in all of the projects that come into the office, while keeping an eye to the future by mentoring staff to become future leaders in architecture.
4D Architects has survived the recent recession and is actively growing with more interesting and exciting designs. We are thrilled to have a progressive and actively involved staff who add tremendously to our capabilities.
4D’s designs can be found throughout the area, from waterfront homes in Seattle and the Eastside to vacation homes at the outer edges of Cle Elum, representing design styles with a progressive edge.
4D Architects’ clientele includes homeowners, contractors, and developers. 4D specializes in single family residential design and smaller mixed-use buildings, and has a special interest in sustainable design and difficult sites.
